Message from President Mangelsdorf on Removing the Encampment Today

今天早上, University 公共安全 and 设施 personnel informed the occupants of the encampment on the Eastman Quadrangle to vacate the area, resulting in a peaceful dispersal, though two non-affiliated individuals were arrested for damaging a Commencement tent. The removal was due to safety and sanitary concerns, and the University remains committed to engaging in respectful dialogue about the conflict in the Middle East and maintaining a safe, harassment-free environment for all students.

Update on University Operations

As an operations update to this morning’s decampment activity, 威尔逊大街. 将会重新开放. There is currently no protest activity observed on campus, but University officials are remaining vigilant in monitoring campus spaces and buildings.

Today, University of Rochester officials began efforts to disband the encampment on the Eastman Quad. Members of our DPS and 设施 teams approached the encampment this morning to clearly communicate to those there that the tents, barriers and other accumulated items were being removed from the Eastman Quad.

Following this communication, most all students at the encampment soon dispersed. 撰写本文时, the encampment has largely ended, but the students did mobilize as a small group to a different part of 河校区.

University officials have tried extremely hard to maintain open lines of communication with student protest leaders and have provided leeway to find middle ground on freedom of expression. 然而, given the aggregation of numerous policy violations of time, place and manner for protests, the decision was made to end the encampment and begin the process of restoring campus life.

威尔逊大街. will be closed to incoming vehicles until further notice. We are continuing to closely monitor all campus spaces and activities in the days leading up to Commencement and preparing for all emergency scenarios, including future disruptions.
